Norfolk

INTRODUCTION

Both Norfolk and its neighbouring county Suffolk well deserve their popularity, for the pace is gentler. One needs time to get to know the area. There are quiet lanes and unspoilt villages to explore, forests, woods, and heathlands. Or one can take to the water and explore the Norfolk Broads.

The coastline at Hunstanton has striped cliffs of white chalk and red sandstone, while the town itself retains much of its Victorian charm. Elsewhere, the coastline has extensive salt marshes, which are the ideal habitat for many sea-birds. Then again, there are wide sandy beaches backed by dunes and pine trees in the Holkham and Wells area. Offshore at Scolt Head there is a colony of seals. Sheringham and Cromer, and many other smaller resorts, grew up around the fishing industry, the boats working off the beach; although much reduced, one can sometimes still buy fresh caught crabs straight from the fishermen. Further round the coast, the town of Great Yarmouth is full of the fun of the fair, with wide sandy beaches, the impressive Marine Parade, and colourful gardens.

Inland there are small attractive towns such as Holt, with many houses made of flint, a frequently-used building material in Norfolk. And then there is Norwich, with its soaring cathedral spire, many churches, alleyways, cobbled streets, market place and Norman castle. Norwich is also a city for the shopper, with a compact network of pedestrianised streets and mall, 3 miles of shopping! When the feet are tired, there are many cafes for refreshment and recovery.
